Cutthroat Trout Populations

PROPOSED SURVEY OF STREAMS FOR REMNANT CUTTHROAT TROUT POPULATIONS  (Mike Robinson, research partnership with Trout Unlimited Canada,Interforestation and ASRD)

The intent of this project is to identify which waters, primarily of first and second order streams, contain fish and to collect tissue samples from any cutthroat trout sampled to determine whether any are remnant populations of westslope cutthroat trout. We will also be identifying barriers on streams and, if present, any barren waters upstream of these barriers that appear to provide suitable habitat where self-sustaining populations of westslope cutthroat trout could be established.

These barren waters could be the best way of preserving genetically unique populations of westslope cutthroat trout in other streams that are likely to be extirpated due to invasion by exotics.
